Historic buildings and student lets

Canterbury is a cathedral city with a World Heritage Site at its heart, and much of its centre is listed or in a conservation area. Fitting a fire alarm there means minimal damage to historic fabric, which is why we often recommend wireless Ajax EN54 systems: no chasing walls and far fewer fixings.

The city is also home to the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University and a campus of the University for the Creative Arts, and has a large rented sector, so many of the buildings we look after are HMOs and student lets, where Canterbury City Council’s licence conditions decide the system. On the coast, Whitstable and Herne Bay have hotels, restaurants, pubs and holiday lets.

Buildings we look after in Canterbury

  • Listed and historic buildings in and around the city centre
  • HMOs, student lets and converted flats
  • Hotels, restaurants and pubs, including in Whitstable and Herne Bay
  • Offices, shops and surgeries
  • Schools, churches and community buildings

Kent Fire and Rescue usually needs a fire confirmed first

For most premises, callers must confirm a fire, or signs of fire, before crews are sent to an automatic fire alarm, day and night. Your fire procedure needs to say who checks and who calls 999.

What the policy means for you

Fire alarm questions from Canterbury

Can you fit a fire alarm in a listed building in Canterbury?

Yes. We plan device positions and cable routes to minimise damage, and often use wireless Ajax EN54 devices, which need no cable runs. We can work with your conservation officer where consent is needed.

What fire alarm does my Canterbury HMO need?

It depends on the building, its fire risk assessment and Canterbury City Council’s licence conditions. Smaller HMOs often need a Grade D1 system to Category LD2; larger ones a panel-based Grade A system. Fire alarms for HMOs.

Do you cover Whitstable and Herne Bay?

Yes, both are around 40 minutes from our base, along with the villages around Canterbury.

Are you BAFE registered for fire alarm work in Canterbury?

Yes. Nova Security Systems is BAFE SP203-1 Registered Organisation No. 303674 for Design, Installation, Commissioning/Handover and Maintenance, third-party certificated by NSI. The registration covers our work wherever we are, including Canterbury.

Can you take over our existing fire alarm?

Yes. We take over most makes of system that are still serviceable, starting with a full inspection. We rebuild missing records such as the zone plan and logbook, and can transfer your monitoring contract.
