Emergency lighting installation and testing
We design, install and test emergency lighting to BS 5266-1:2025 alongside your fire alarm, so both life safety systems are looked after by one company, with one set of paperwork.
A short functional test every month and a full rated-duration test once a year, both recorded in a logbook. BS 5266-1:2025, which took effect on 31 October 2025, also asks for lighting levels to be verified at least every five years.
What we do
- Design for escape routes, exits, open areas and high-risk task areas, with exit signs
- Installation of self-contained LED fittings, maintained or non-maintained
- Monthly and annual testing, with certificates and a test log
- Repairs, battery replacements and upgrades of old fittings
- Testing combined with your fire alarm service visits
Your monthly test
Each month someone should briefly simulate a mains failure and check every fitting lights, then record it. Many modern fittings test themselves; we’ll show you what your system needs.
Emergency lighting questions
Is emergency lighting a legal requirement?
Where it’s needed, yes. Under article 14 of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, emergency routes and exits that need lighting must have emergency lighting of adequate intensity if the normal lighting fails. Your fire risk assessment identifies where it’s needed.
How long does emergency lighting need to last?
Most premises need three hours, particularly where people sleep or the building may be reoccupied straight after a power cut. BS 5266-1 and your fire risk assessment decide.
Can you test emergency lighting outside working hours?
Yes. The annual full-duration test leaves the lights discharged for a while afterwards, so it’s often best done when the building is quiet.
