A wireless fire alarm for Folkestone Storage

We designed, installed and commissioned a commercial Ajax EN54 wireless fire alarm for our self storage client, Folkestone Storage. Concrete floors and a floor space packed with metal storage walls were no match for the wireless signal: one range extender covers the whole building.

The Folkestone Storage building on Foord Road

The challenge

Self storage buildings are hard on radio. Folkestone Storage has concrete floors and a floor space packed with metal storage walls, the kind of building where a wireless system has to be properly designed to work reliably. Three pitched roofs also needed protecting.

What we installed

  • A commercial Ajax EN54 wireless fire alarm, designed, installed and commissioned by us, with detectors, manual call points and sounder beacons throughout.
  • One range extender (ReX) for the whole building. Ajax’s Jeweller radio had no trouble with the concrete and metal.
  • Fire Beam BLUE beam detectors from The Fire Beam Company protecting the three pitched roofs.
  • Ajax EN54 Fire Hub control panel with one of our framed zone plans beside it.
  • The full paperwork: design, installation, commissioning and acceptance certificates, logbook and as-fitted drawings.

Equipment supplied by SatSecure; thanks to Keval Jobanputra, and to Sergii Shcherbakov and Paul Pope Eng.Tech AIFireE LCGI for their product support.

Questions

Does wireless work in a building full of metal storage units?

Yes, with the right design. At Folkestone Storage the Ajax EN54 Jeweller radio worked through concrete floors and walls of metal storage units with just one range extender for the whole building. We check the signal to every device before handover.

How do you protect a pitched roof space?

Beam detectors are often the best answer for high or pitched roofs. A beam detector watches for smoke across a long open space, so one unit can cover what would otherwise need many point detectors at height.

What paperwork does a storage business get?

The full BS 5839-1 set: design, installation, commissioning and acceptance certificates, a logbook and an as-fitted drawing, with a zone plan beside the panel. Every document we hand over

More self storage projects: remote CCTV monitoring and access control and escape doors.
