A BAFE registered fire alarm company for London
London Fire Brigade points out that there’s no legal minimum qualification for fire alarm designers, and suggests using only a design and installation specialist who operates a third-party certification scheme such as BAFE SP203-1 or LPCB LPS 1014. We’re BAFE SP203-1 registered for design, installation, commissioning/handover and maintenance, certificated by NSI, and every non-domestic system we design follows BS 5839-1:2025. London Fire Brigade on choosing a fire alarm company.
We’re based at Shearway Business Park in Folkestone, about 70 miles from central London, and we already work in the capital. In Southwark we installed CCTV, video door entry and access control throughout a 50-apartment development for Southwark Council, built by Guildmore and handed over in January 2026. London’s housing makes HMOs a big part of fire alarm work. In England, HMOs with five or more people in two or more households need a mandatory licence, and most London boroughs also run additional licensing for smaller HMOs: Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Wandsworth, for example, across the whole borough. The fire alarm an HMO needs depends on the building, its fire risk assessment and the borough’s licence conditions. We design to BS 5839-6 or BS 5839-1:2025 and hand over the certificates the council’s housing team will ask for. Fire alarms for HMOs.

London Fire Brigade needs a fire confirmed by day
Between 7am and 8.30pm, London Fire Brigade doesn’t attend automatic fire alarms at most commercial buildings unless someone calls 999 to confirm a fire. It still attends at night, and at any time for exempt premises such as homes, flats, HMOs, hotels, hospitals, care homes, schools, nurseries and listed buildings. Your fire procedure needs to say who checks and who calls.

Fire alarm questions from London
Do you cover all of London?
Yes. We install and maintain fire alarms in all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, from our base in Folkestone, about 70 miles from central London. Surveys, installations and maintenance visits are booked ahead, and contracted customers have our 24/7 support line: call 01303 720282 and choose option 1.
Will London Fire Brigade come when our fire alarm goes off?
Between 7am and 8.30pm, not to most commercial buildings, unless someone calls 999 to confirm a fire: smoke or flames seen, heard, smelt or felt. At night, and at any time for exempt premises such as homes, flats, HMOs, hotels, hospitals, care homes, schools, nurseries and listed buildings, it still attends. The policy has applied since 29 October 2024. Nobody should put themselves at risk checking for a fire.
Does London Fire Brigade charge for false alarms?
Not at the moment: its charges for repeated false alarms have been suspended since 2017. It has said it is exploring charging for persistent false alarms, so it’s worth cutting them now, with the right detectors in the right places, regular servicing and a clear procedure for checking before anyone calls 999. If your alarm is monitored, London Fire Brigade’s guidance asks the alarm receiving centre to call the premises first.
Who enforces fire safety law in London?
The London Fire Commissioner, through London Fire Brigade, enforces the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 in Greater London, apart from a few kinds of premises with their own enforcers, such as construction sites. The Order requires fire detection and warning where necessary, to the extent that is appropriate, and your fire risk assessment decides what that means for your building.
What fire alarm does a London HMO need?
It depends on the building, its fire risk assessment and the borough’s licence conditions. Smaller HMOs often need a Grade D1 system to Category LD2; larger ones a panel-based Grade A system. In England, HMOs with five or more people in two or more households need a mandatory licence, and most London boroughs also license smaller HMOs through additional licensing. Fire alarms for HMOs.
Are you BAFE registered for fire alarm work in London?
Yes. Nova Security Systems is BAFE SP203-1 Registered Organisation No. 303674 for Design, Installation, Commissioning/Handover and Maintenance, third-party certificated by NSI. The registration covers our work wherever we are, including London.
Can you take over our existing fire alarm?
Yes. We take over most makes of system that are still serviceable, starting with a full inspection. We rebuild missing records such as the zone plan and logbook, and can transfer your monitoring contract.
