BS 5839‑1 is the British Standard for fire detection and alarm systems in non‑domestic premises. It covers system design, installation, commissioning and maintenance, and defines the system categories — life protection (L1 to L5), property protection (P1 to P2) and manual systems (M) — so a building gets the right level of coverage for its risk.
A conventional system divides a building into zones, telling you the general area of a fire or fault. An addressable system identifies each individual device, so a fire or fault is pinpointed to an exact location. Addressable systems are usually the better choice for larger or more complex buildings.
